Gulaal takes its name from the colour that fills the air at festival time — a crimson with warmth in it rather than depth alone. The cloth is bandhani, tied and dyed by hand so that thousands of tiny points resist the colour and come out white. Look closely and each mark is its own small ring, no two quite alike.
The kurta is cut straight and easy, falling below the knee, with a round neck opening to a short notch at the centre. Three-quarter sleeves finish in a fine row of flat gold discs, and the same run of gold traces the hem. It is paired with a matching straight-leg palazzo.
Made for the evenings the season is full of — and easy enough to wear long after they have passed.
